چکیده
The natural estrogen 17 -estradiol (E2) is responsible for the endocrine disruption and also has potential effect on the reproduction of vertebrate. However, its effect on invertebrate reproduction has scarcely been studied. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of E2 on survival, egg production and egg hatch of calanoid copepod, Acartia omorii under bath administration. Survival was observed every 24h for 10 days. Each 10 individuals of adult female were incubated at different concentration of E2 (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 g/L) with food (Isochrysis sp.+Tetraselmis sp., ratio 1:1). Egg production was observed through the incubation of single gravid female with above same conditions. Egg hatching success was examined for each 100 eggs at different concentration of E2, which were obtained from preexposed female at the same concentration. More than 80% of survival was obtained in 100 g/L level after 96h exposure periods. Egg production was slightly increased in 100 g/L but not significant. No significant (P<0.05) effect of E2 was observed in hatching rate up to 100 g/L level. Result suggests that there is no effect of E2 on the reproduction success of the calanoid copepod, A. omorii in the coastal and marine environment.

Accumulation of Polyunsaturated Aldehydes in the Gonads of the Copepod Acartia tonsa Revealed by Tailored Fluorescent Probes
Polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) are released by several diatom species during predation. Besides other attributed activities, these oxylipins can interfere with the reproduction of copepods, important predators of diatoms. While intensive research has been carried out to document the effects of PUAs on copepod reproduction, little is known about the underlying mechanistic aspects of PUA action...
متن کاملProjected marine climate change: effects on copepod oxidative status and reproduction
Zooplankton are an important link between primary producers and fish. Therefore, it is crucial to address their responses when predicting effects of climate change on pelagic ecosystems. For realistic community-level predictions, several biotic and abiotic climate-related variables should be examined in combination. We studied the combined effects of ocean acidification and global warming predi...
متن کاملToxicity of nickel in the marine calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa: Nickel chloride versus nanoparticles.
Nickel compounds are widely used in industries and have been massively introduced in the environment in different chemical forms. Here we report the effect of two different chemical forms of nickel, NiCl2 and nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs), on the reproduction of the marine calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa. The behavior of nickel nanoparticles was analyzed with different techniques and with two pro...

Dense localized blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii are a recent phenomenon in the low salinity waters of the Baltic Sea. This study reports results from laboratory experiments investigating the interaction between PSP toxin producing strains of A. ostenfeldii and two copepod species, Eurytemora affinis and Acartia bifilosa, from the northern Baltic Sea. Copepod grazing r...
متن کاملDMSP-consuming bacteria associated with the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa (Dana).
DMSP-consuming bacteria (DCB) were recovered from the body and fecal pellets of the copepod Acartia tonsa (Dana). The most probable number of DCB associated with starved A. tonsa was 9.2x10(2) cells copepod(-1). The abundance of DCB recovered from the copepod body increased to 1.6-2.8x10(4) after the copepod fed on DMSP-containing alga. DCB abundance associated with fecal pellets averaged 1.2x1...
